The Filter is Important for your HVAC System

Make sure to always inspect the HVAC system and filter for your home. The filter is designed to remove any dust, dirt, and other pollutants from your home. By inspecting it regularly, you can help ensure it is in the most efficient condition possible to operate. There are some tips to know if your filter or HVAC system needs to be inspected. You can also contact us, and we can advise you on a schedule.

A dirty filter that has been exposed to condensation can become damp, which can lead to mold growth that can be spread throughout the home by the HVAC system.  This can lead to serious health consequences, not to mention a compromised unit that will likely require servicing and may require replacement, depending on the severity of the moisture problem.

Most filters are disposable and shaped in cells, screens or fins designed to trap as much airborne debris as possible.  It is important to use the appropriate filter for your unit. Also remember to never run the HVAC system without a filter installed. Without a filter, the dust and dirt can get into the system, causing premature damage to some of the parts.

You should remember to change the filter regularly, and check it at least once a month. This is especially important if you have pets, a large family, you or a family member smokes, anyone in the household has allergies or asthma. These all increase the amount of dirt that the filter will pick up as the air travels through your home. By running the system with a clogged or dirty filter, you increase the amount of wear and strain on parts of the unit. This will then increase the chance for frequent repairs needing to be done on it.

If you notice evidence of microbial growth or mold on the filter.  Mold spores already infiltrating the home via the HVAC system are not only bad for the unit itself, but they can pose a health hazard for the family, ranging from an irritated respiratory system to a serious allergic reaction.  The musty smell produced by a moldy HVAC filter is also unpleasant and may take a while to completely eradicate from inside the home.  If you discover that you have moldy air filter, it’s important to have the cause investigated further. That way it can prevent the issue in the future.
